2026 Chicago Bears Team Preview
The Bears turned things around in 2025 under first -year head coach
Ben Johnson, formerly the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions.
Chicago snapped a four -year playoff drought by finishing 11 -6. Their
first winning record since 2018 and notched a postseason victory to cap
their turnaround. Johnson came to Chicago with a strong resume,
having guided Detroit's offense to three straight top-five finishes in both
scoring and yardage, aided by elite talent at every skill position.
He first broke into the NFL coaching ranks back in 2012 at just 26 years
old. The offensive revival in Chicago was stark: the Bears put up 441
points, a jump of 131 from their 2024 total (310). Their defense took a
step back, surrendering 415 points compared to 370 the previous year.
Chicago promoted Press Taylor from their pass game coordinator to
offensive coordinator over the winter, a position he held from 2022 to
2024 for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Taylor started his NFL career in 2023
for the Philadelphia Eagles, where he worked for eight years. His peak
job for their system came in 2020 (pass game coordinator). The Bears
climbed to eighth in points scored (441) and sixth in offensive yards
(6,442).
Dennis Allen returns to run the Bears’ defense for a second season. He
worked in New Orleans’ coaching system for 14 years, highlighted by
three seasons as their head coach (18-25). The Raiders (8-28) fired him
after 36 games in 2014. Allen has nine years of experience running a
defense. Chicago allowed 415 points (23rd) in 2025 while ranking 27th
in yards allowed (6,354).
Offense
Only the Dallas Cowboys (1,090) ran more plays than the Bears (1,079)
in 2025. Chicago ran the ball 46.8% of the time last year, compared to
42.9% in 2024. They ranked third in rushing yards (2,456) while gaining
an impressive 4.9 yards per carry. The Bear s averaged 29.7 runs per
game, with 19 reaching the end zone and 11 gaining at least 20 yards.
None of their carries reach the 40-yard mark.
Chicago climbed to 12th in passing yards (3,991) despite a dismal
completion rate (58.2%) and no edge on their yards per pass attempt
(7.0). Their offensive line allowed only 24 sacks (one off the league low
and 44 fewer than in 2024). The Bears tossed 28 touchdowns, with only
seven interceptions.
