Comments: Golf Rankings for Sony Open
Did you enjoy the small field last week? Well, it was a nice warm up for the first full field even of 2016 - the Sony Open in Hawaii. And I'm back to help with all of the Yahoo! gamers out there. Last week's tournament had only 32 players, so many of these golfers are making their first start in weeks. The Yahoo! A-List roster is full of land mines. I wouldn't even consider about half of the players there.
We stay in Hawaii this week (and why wouldn't you want to stay in Hawaii?) for the Sony Open in Hawaii. The tournament shares some similarities with last week's Hyundai Tournament of Champions, but some key differences.
The Sony Open takes place at Waialae Country Club Championship Golf Course – a par 70 course that runs just over 7,000 yards (7,044 yards). The greens are bermudagrass as we saw last week. But, it's a much shorter course with narrower fairways and potential problems around every corner.
Waialae has hosted this tournament for more than 50 years and hasn't gone through major changes since 1999. No golfer has won here in his debut since 1977, so like last week, there seems to be a period of adjustment before you feel comfortable here.
As you'll see with par 70s, scoring on par 4s is a must. On many par 70 courses, scoring on the par 5s is a given (and with only two per round, there isn't a lot ground to be made up). But, if you find a player who can score on par 4s, that's a huge differentiator. So, we'll look at par 4: birdie or better (BOB4) this week.
And as it's a short course, we're going to see a lot of golfers with short irons into these par 4s. So, we'll examine GIR Percentage < 125 yards (GIR125). And finally, we want to stay out of trouble so, we'll also take a look at Bogey Avoidance (BA) to see those players who can stay out of trouble (or at least work their way through trouble). And of course, we examine Strokes Gained: Putting and Strokes Gained: Tee to Green each week.

Man all the CLASS spots are all messed up as per yahoo. You have players listed in C but they are in A. B's are in C. A's are in C. Very confusing. Hard to look up players that you like from your written profiles and make it correspond to what is actually going on in Yahoo. Case in Point. Justin Thomas is in A class......where you have him listed in C Class.......there are a bunch like that.
Thanks very much for reading and pointing this out. My apologies for the mixup. We are looking into it currently.
