Golf Rankings for Puerto Rico Open
Robert Garrigus
I'm surprised that Garrigus doesn't have better course history here, with two 38th place finishes and one MC. He's a pretty talented veteran considering the field around him, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him contend. He's made four of his past six cuts on Tour, and flashed some high finishes on the west coast. Garrigus is a pretty solid putter, and has the distance to dominate the par-5s. He's quietly been striking his irons well this year, so that bodes well for his chances.
Will MacKenzie
Willy Mack is exactly the type of player I target in these weak-field events, because he tends to perform his best when he's not against the stiffest competition. That's not a knock on him, just the truth about a player who takes advantage of the situation. He's made all four cuts here, including 8th and 6th place finishes the past two seasons. His form isn't great, but he flashed one high recent finish. If he gets a little confidence with the putter, he has the iron game that can withstand the difficult, windy conditions.
Bryson Dechambeau
After being in contention for much of the week at Valspar, Bryson faltered to a 27th place finish. Either way, it should be a good confidence boost for someone who had missed a bunch of cuts in a row. Although I'm not a huge fan, he is one of the most talented golfers in the field, and should be comfortable playing with a lot of the young guns he grew up with. His ball-striking is solid, so his week depends on whatever putter and putting stance he tries.
Zac Blair
Blair is the definition of average. He finished 38th in his only start here, and has made half of his recent cuts on Tour. Even his finishes are average: 34th, 48th, 41st, 34th, and 57th. What I like about Blair is he's a solid ball-striker and putter, and should keep himself in play this week. He's also flashed at the Sony Open, another windy, coastal venue. If he gets off to a hot start with his putter, Blair could find himself in the mix this weekend.
Jonathan Byrd
J-Byrd hasn't been heard from in a while, but he's always a course horse here in Puerto Rico. He's gone 39th, 16th, 12th, and 13th in his past four starts here, so clearly it suits his game. He's a great putter and ball-striker who always struggled with distance, which isn't a must here at Coco Beach.
Steve Wheatcroft
Wheatcroft is popping on my value model, so he's worthy of some GPP attention. He's an accurate player who can putt the lights out when he gets hot. He keeps the ball in play, and we've seen him post some low numbers and get into contention the first couple days of events. His form has been off recently, but he did make the cut last week, and now comes back to Coco Beach where he's previously posted a 3rd place finish.
