Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert to start this week
Somehow, the Jacksonville Jaguars weren't impressed with quarterback Luke McCown's 1.8 QB rating last week against the New York Jets. So they are making a change. Head coach Jack Del Rio said Wednesday that rookie Blaine Gabbert
will start on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.
Fantasy Analysis:
Gabbert probably isn't ready for this, but he can't possibly be any worse than McCown. As a person who went against the Jets' defense this past week, it hurt to watch that game, especially since Maurice Jones-Drew
was pretty productive. Why Jacksonville was throwing the ball at all, even down by two scores, made no sense to me because McCown was obviously out of his league. And now he's basically out of a job. I don't think this changes the value of their receiving options drastically -- they're not doing much as is. I think the biggest takeaway from this news is that MJD's value doesn't take a hit. The man just faced the Jets on the road with a QB who everyone knew was clearly inferior and he still gained more than 100 total yards and averaged 4.9 yards per carry. Putting Gabbert in the starting lineup shouldn't make defenses pay even more attention to Jones-Drew; they were already doing as much as they could to stop him when McCown was in there.
