Steelers DB Troy Polamalu given three-year extension

Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu @tpolamalu signed a three-year contract extension which is worth about $9 million annually. Polamalu is now the highest paid safety in NFL history. The deal locks him up until 2014. Polamalu has only played all 16 games once in the last five seasons. Despite that, in the last two seasons, he had 10 interceptions in 19 games played. This extension will keep Polamalu in black and yellow until he is 33 years old. Polamalu was already signed through this year, but the contract includes 2011, making it a four-year deal worth $36.5 million.

Fantasy Analysis:

No matter how you slice it, Pittsburgh's defense goes from great to elite with Polamalu in the lineup. We've all seen what he can do over the last eight seasons as he's been consistently one of the best safeties in the NFL. This 2011 season was the last year in his deal and the Steelers could have opted to let him play it out and reassess the situation later, but they stood behind their guy. Polamalu is a decent option in tackle-heavy IDP leagues but will likely fare better in big play scoring systems.
