49ers TE Vernon Davis is confident that Alex Smith will start this year
Fantasy stud tight end Vernon Davis is confident that the 49ers starting quarterback will be Alex Smith. San Francisco brought in rookie QB Colin Kaepernick
but any inkling about a potential position battle has strictly been a rumor pushed by the media. "Everyone's asking who's going to be the starting quarterback," said Davis. "Alex is going to be the starting quarterback. Coaches have a lot of faith in him and in everything he can do, and so do I."
Fantasy Analysis:
Of course Davis is saying all the right things here. Everyone knows Smith has been given as many second chances as anyone in the NFL, but San Francisco doesn't have a lot of options. Kaepernick is a developmental prospect with two weeks of practice under his belt. If any new head coach can groom a quarterback, it's Jim Harbaugh. It'll be easier said than done, but any notion that Smith won't begin the year the starter is preposterous. Now will he hold onto the job all season? That's a very different question and if he doesn't perform, the 49ers will most certainly see what Kaepernick can do.
