Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart dealing with Achilles pain
Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart
has missed just two games in his three-year NFL career, and that was because of a concussion. But issues with his left Achilles have been with Stewart since his days at the University of Oregon. He was bothered by it during training camp 2009, had surgery last year to cure what ailed him and sat out team-organized practices this year as it cropped back up on him. And now it's forcing him to miss some time in training camp 2011.
Head coach Ron Rivera said Stewart missed Wednesday's practice because of pain around that left Achilles tendon.
"He came out earlier, did some warm-ups and practiced a little bit, but then he kind of aggravated it," Rivera said of Stewart. "So we got him off the field, hoping that it will calm down and we'll have him ready for the game."
Fantasy Analysis:
Well, at least Stewart didn't tear his Achilles tendon like everyone else. The Panthers have a preseason game Friday, and it's uncertain if Stewart will be able to play.
He's extremely talented, but Stewart's fantasy value definitely takes a hit with DeAngelo Williams
back in town. Stewart has been the secondary runner in Carolina's scheme and that's not going to change after the Panthers gave Wiliams a fat contract in free agency. We know what he can do if DeAngelo is unavailable -- just check out Stewart's game logs from weeks 12-15 last season. But he's currently the 22nd running back off the board on average, according to FFToolbox's ADP chart. That's directly behind Williams, but I think that's a little too high for Stewart. When Williams is healthy, Stewart is no more than a flex play.
