WR Derrick Mason chooses Jets over Ravens
Derrick Mason is a New York Jet. He agreed to terms with the team Saturday. The terms were not disclosed. Mason, 37, will be entering his 15th NFL season. He had an opportunity to re-sign with the Ravens, the team that released him last week after he spent six years in Baltimore. But he is moving on instead. "After a lot of very thoughtful and careful consideration, conversations with my family and prayer, I have decided to sign with the New York Jets," Mason told ESPN's Adam Schefter. "I'm looking forward to working under [head coach Rex Ryan] and rejoining some familiar faces."
Fantasy Analysis:
The Jets' top three wide receivers are now Santonio Holmes, Plaxico Burress
and Derrick Mason, with the latter two presumably fighting for the No. 2 WR spot. Of course, Mason could basically replace the recently released Jerricho Cotchery and work out of the slot while Burress is sent wide.
This is good news for Mark Sanchez
, who has yet another veteran wide receiver to work with. However, I don't think this does much for Mason's fantasy value. He's an aging possession receiver in a offense that emphasizes the run. He's a reserve in fantasy.
This addition may hurt tight end Dustin Keller
the most for fantasy purposes. His importance on those intermediate routes is lessened with Mason's presence.
On the other end, the Ravens are noticeably thin at WR. They have Anquan Boldin, but second-round rookie Torrey Smith is slated to be the No. 2 wideout, and there is very little proven depth behind them.
