Bengals pick up TE Bo Scaife

It wasn't too long ago that Bo Scaife was supposed to be the burgeoning tight end who was ready to take the league by storm. But now he's 30 years old and will be the mentor for a young tight end with high expectations. Scaife signed with the Cincinnati Bengals on Friday. According to a league source, he'll be working on a one-year contract worth $1 million. He is expected to backup second-year tight end Jermaine Gresham. Scaife caught 58 passes for 561 yards and two touchdowns back in 2008, but he has been unable to build upon those numbers. Last year, he caught 36 passes for 318 yards.

Fantasy Analysis:

Scaife will be used in the Bengals' West Coast offense, which often puts two tight ends on the field. But Gresham isn't even a TE1 in fantasy, so his backup has very, very little fantasy value aside from a few random touchdowns. I guess Scaife had a lot less fantasy value than I realized. The fact that a rookie quarterback will probably be throwing him passes once the season begins doesn't help either.
