Jaguars' Marcedes Lewis wants a long-term contract
There isn't much Marcedes Lewis
can do right now about his contract status with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He wants a long-term deal, but before the NFL reached its current lockout state, the team slapped the franchise tag on the tight end. In a recent interview with Pro Football Weekly, Lewis said he'll bear with the situation, but he's not happy with it.
"I want a long-term contract, and I know Jacksonville wants me there," Lewis said. "I love playing in Jacksonville and who I work with there. But at the same time, who wants to play under a one-year contract? That's not cool.
"Especially when you have played five years and given your sweat, blood and tears to the team and laid it out there every Sunday, putting your body on the line. Obviously, it is what it is. I am just sitting here, being patient and trusting that we are going to get it done."
However, Lewis didn't really hint at holding out if his demands aren't met.
"Jacksonville knows what (it) has in me and what kind of guy I am, my character," he said. "They know I am going to give it every day. In the meantime, I just work hard and keep a smile on my face."
Lewis had the best season of his five-year career in 2010, notching 10 touchdowns and 700 yards.
Fantasy Analysis:
The franchise tag may not even be available when the league and players arrive at a new collective bargaining agreement, so the Jags may not have a choice but to satisfy Lewis. He is currently the ninth tight end off the board in mocks at mockdraftcentral.com, right after Dustin Keller and before Zach Miller. That sounds about right, maybe a bit low. He may never be a yardage beast, but the short TDs should keep him inside of the top 10 at that position through this season.
