Plaxico Burress out of jail, looking forward to playing in NFL again
After spending more than 20 months behind bars for unlawful gun possession, Plaxico Burress was released from a New York correctional facility Monday. Burress, who will turn 34 in August, said he was happy to be through with this time in his life and looked forward to spending time with his family, including his two young children. But Burress also wants to get back on an NFL field. He last played with the New York Giants in November 2008 and said he'll be prepared for the 2011 season. "As far as football is concerned, if and when everything gets settled, when they get back on the field, I'll be ready," Burress told a large group of reporters outside the Oneida Correctional Facility in Rome, N.Y. Burress was greeted upon his release by his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, who jumped into Burress' arms. Rosenhaus told the media that he and Burress will keep their options open. "We are going to be open to all 32 teams," Rosenhaus said. "Ultimately, this will be Plax's decision, not mine. I am here to help him pick the best spot and get the very best contract. And that is what we will do." "Before the lockout started and during that very brief window, right around the time of the draft, the feedback was excellent. Plaxico is going to be a top free agent, there are going to be multiple teams interested in signing him. I expect him to get a good contract, I expect him to absolutely be playing. I think he'll be coveted. He'll be one of our top free agents." Because of the lockout, Burress and his agent aren't allowed to have any contact with potential suitors.
Fantasy Analysis:
Just from what I saw on television this morning, Burress looked to be in decent shape. I mean, prison certainly allows you to work out a lot. However, there will be concerns over rust, age and loss of skills with Burress. Teams such as the Rams, Jets, Eagles, Raiders and Redskins are rumored to be interested in his services. Wherever he lands, I think he's worth a flyer in fantasy leagues. Burress is not a speed demon and may have lost another step, and he probably won't be consistent threat when it comes to yardage -- he never really was that during his prime -- but his 6-foot-5-inch frame could lead to a lot of easy touchdowns. He could be a decent bye-week option, given an exploitable matchup and playing time.
