Lions see Mikel Leshoure as short-yardage, closing RB
Maybe this falls into the sarcastic "you don't say!" category of NFL news, but it's worth bringing up: Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz thinks rookie running back Mikel Leshoure
will see most of his work late in games and by the goal line.
"Jahvid Best
, when healthy, proved that he can be an explosive playmaker," Schwartz said Tuesday. "But he isn't built to be a short-yardage back when there's three minutes left in the game and you're protecting a seven-point lead, but Leshoure is."
Fantasy Analysis:
Everyone figured as much. Best is 5-foot-10-inches tall and about 200 pounds. Leshoure was measured at the combine as 6 feet, 227 pounds, so this makes sense. But important questions remain about this duo. For example, how will Leshoure be used early in games and in the middle of the field? Second, as Schwartz mentioned last month, how will Best and Leshoure see their roles change from week to week? These are questions that will probably go without answers until the season begins. Best is still the better fantasy pick because he has a year of experience and will get the majority of the carries. But Leshoure is becoming a more intriguing mid-to-late round selection. The rookie's current average draft position at mockdraftcentral.com is 168, making him the 59th-ranked running back. His stock will rise.
