Chiefs coaches have high expectations for Jamaal Charles
Unlike the Jets with Shonn Greene, the no Kansas City Chiefs coach is providing a ballpark figure on how many carries Jamaal Charles
will get in 2011. But an uptick of some sort looks like a very good bet.
Chiefs head coach Todd Haley told ESPN's Bill Williamson on Friday that "this is an important offseason" for Charles and that he "wants Charles to take the next step and be ready for more carries if need be."
Charles ran for 1,467 yards on just 230 carries last season for an amazing 6.4 yards per carry. This came after Charles ran for more than 1,100 yards on 190 carries in 2009. At under 6 feet tall and less than 200 pounds, the Chiefs have been very careful to not overwork the 24-year-old Charles.
Fantasy Analysis:
The whole article is basically Haley pumping up his players, as a good coach should do. While he hints at a bigger role for Charles, he also talks about how Thomas Jones is in "supreme shape" and that he wants Dexter McCluster
to be more involved in the running game. This may give some Charles enthusiasts pause, but don't let Jones or McCluster worry you. The Chiefs understand that Charles is their most explosive offensive weapon and they'll find ways to get him the ball. The impact of Charles' low carry count these past couple of seasons has been somewhat minimized thanks to his receiving skills, which have enabled him to catch 85 passes since the start of 2009.
Charles should surpass 300 touches this season and should be comfortably within the top-five picks at your draft.
