Mike Martz says larger role coming to Bears' Earl Bennett

Chicago Bears wide receiver Earl Bennett @Agent_Orange80 is one of the better possession receivers in the NFL. However, he missed two games last year and played three others in which he caught just one pass. Offensive coordinator Mike Martz told the Bears' official website Tuesday that if Bennett is on the field, the coaches will find ways to get the ball to him more often. "We didn't throw it to him enough," Martz said of Bennett. "That will be remedied. He will figure in a much larger role than he did last year. He came to us late. He was injured. I wasn't really sure where he was with all the stuff. But he established himself as a guy who needs to get a lot more balls than he did." Martz also said he would like to use Bennett out wide on more plays, not just primarily out of the slot. According to profootballfocus.com, Bennett and the Bengals' Jordan Shipley were the only two players who recorded at least 50 receptions, playoffs included, and not drop any pass headed their way. Bennett caught 46 balls during the regular season for 561 yards and three touchdowns. He added four catches for 58 yards and a touchdown through Chicago's two playoff games.

Fantasy Analysis:

If Bennett had played in every game last season, he probably would have ended up with overall numbers very similar to what he produced in 2010 -- 54 receptions, 717 yards. More targets may be coming, but I don't think it will present a massive upgrade. Johnny Knox @Jknox13, Greg Olsen, Matt Forte and Devin Hester will still demand their fair share. Plus, you still have to rely on Jay Cutler to actually get the pass to him, which is never a foregone conclusion. I'd put Bennett's production ceiling at 70 catches, 900 yards and five touchdowns. That would be WR3 worthy, but that is the absolute most you could ever expect. As of now, he's still just a late-round sleeper pick.
