Redskins expected to enter training camp with John Beck as starting QB
The Washington Redskins didn't draft a quarterback last month. They are expected to rid themselves of Donovan McNabb
as soon as its legal under league rules and Rex Grossman is a free agent. That could leave John Beck as the only QB on the Redskins' roster. But per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Beck is expected to be Washington's starter whenever training camp opens.
"It will be his job to lose," Schefter said of Beck on NFL Live. "... The Redskins believe in Beck and he will go into camp as the Washington Redskins' starting quarterback, barring the unforeseen."
Beck, 29, was a second-round pick in 2007 out of BYU. He played in five games with four starts for the Miami Dolphins that year. And while he was terrible for the most part, so were the Dolphins, who went 1-15 that season.
He was cut by Miami after the '08 season and didn't throw a pass while on the Ravens' and the Redskins' roster in 2009 and 2010, respectively.
Fantasy Analysis:
Beck has been saying all of the right things lately, stressing to anyone with a pair of ears that he's ready to be a starting quarterback again. He says he is doing everything he can to prepare for a role that he believes is already his in Washington. That includes organizing workouts with teammates so that they can begin to view him as a leader. Schefter also said that when Shanahan looked back at the 2007 draft, he had Beck as the No. 1 quarterback available, ahead of JaMarcus Russell, Brady Quinn and Kevin Kolb, who were drafted in front of Beck. Just because Shanahan's going to ride with Beck doesn't mean you have to. It's best if fantasy owners let Beck prove himself before employing him on their team. Remember that he hasn't done anything in an NFL game since Dec. 30, 2007. Washington will surely add a veteran QB or two as soon as it can.
