49ers' Colin Kaepernick underwent surgery after draft

That headline probably makes the actual story sound more scary than it actually is. But hey, it's Friday the 13th; shouldn't everything be a little extra frightening? Anyway, San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Colin Kaepernick @Kaepernick7 said Friday that he underwent surgery on the lower part of his left leg shortly after the recent draft. But Kaepernick qualified the surgery "nothing serious," and the 49ers said they were aware of the pre-existing injury prior to taking Kaepernick in the second round. Kaepernick has kept details of the surgery to a minimum, but said the leg began bothering him toward the end of last season. However, he played through the injury for his final four games at Nevada, then went to the Senior Bowl and the scouting combine, leaving little time to get the ailment fixed.

Fantasy Analysis:

Kaepernick's legs are maybe his best weapon at this point. Last season, Kaepernick rushed for 1,206 yards and scored 20 rushing touchdowns. Kaepernick is the only player in NCAA history to rush for more than 4,000 yards while throwing for more than 10,000 yards. And the 49ers plan to put Kaepernick's athleticism to work this season, even if he isn't their starting quarterback. General manager Trent Baalke hinted Friday that the team will use him as a runner in some plays, much like how the Broncos used Tim Tebow for most of last season. That won't mean much for Kaepernick's fantasy value until he gains a starting QB gig.
