WR Torrey Smith could start for Ravens right away

Unless you're a quarterback in Indianapolis, a running back in Minnesota, a tight end in San Diego, etc., I guess any player could start in the NFL -- given the right situation -- if he is impressive enough during all of the preseason activities. So maybe news that Ravens rookie wide receiver Torrey Smith @TorreySmithWR could be a part the team's starting lineup in week one isn't eye-opening news. But it does give us fantasy owners another player to put on/raise up our cheat sheets. "[Smith] is coming in to compete and be a starting wide receiver for us," general manager Ozzie Newsome said Wednesday. "The vertical speed he brings to us will be a big asset. Joe (Flacco) is a very good deep thrower. Torrey also has the ability to be a returner. We can utilize him there, but he's competing to be a starting wide receiver." Smith was drafted with the 58th pick in the recent draft.

Fantasy Analysis:

The Ravens drafted another receiver in the fourth round, Tandon Doss @Tandondoss. But he's more of an Anquan Boldin @AnquanBoldin-type. The Ravens don't have anyone quite like Smith, who is a true big-play threat. He remains a raw product as there are concerns about his route-running and hands. But he's got 4.4-40 speed and should help open up the Ravens' passing attack this year. Smith's fantasy contributions will likely be hit and miss in 2011. But his abilities presents a very nice option for Joe Flacco @TeamFlacco.
