Giants' Hakeem Nicks is in the best shape of his life
Hakeem Nicks didn't say that directly, but you'll see a bunch of articles this summer -- lockout or not lockout -- stressing that same cliche. On Thursday, the Newark Star-Ledger caught up with Nicks in at a high school in Hoboken, N.J. as he and other Giants receivers caught passes from Eli Manning and Sage Rosenfels. This time last year, Nicks' conditioning had fallen behind due to his recovery from toe surgery. He also battled toe, leg and ankle injuries last year. But right now, Nicks says he is completely healthy and ready to play. "I've put on a little bit more muscle weight," Nicks said. "I've just been training. ... A month after the season I got right back into it. I've been training ever since. "I feel healthy. I feel like I could go right now if we needed to."
Fantasy Analysis:
Nicks has missed five games over the past two seasons, but any injury concerns haven't affected his fantasy draft stock to this point. His average draft position at mockdraftcentral.com is 19. He was the 17th pick and the third wide receiver off the board during an experts draft I participated in for FFToolbox on Tuesday. Nicks caught 79 passes for 1,052 yards and 11 touchdowns in only 13 games last season. There was no doubt that he was the game's best receiver for about a month during October-November 2010. If we can get 16 games out of him in 2011, he's among a small group of players who could be the top fantasy WR. Judging off of reports in May, it sounds like he's preparing well for a full campaign.
