Redskins' Mike Shanahan says RB Roy Helu reminds him of Clinton Portis
Running back Roy Helu
is a short, stocky back with 4.4-40 speed. While Helu isn't as physical as his stature would indicate, he does possess a rare combination of size and speed. It's certainly rare to the Washington Redskins. No one on their running back depth chart can match his speed, and head coach Mike Shanahan said watching Helu conjures memories of a certain former Pro Bowler he coached in Denver.
"In Denver, with Clinton (Portis), he was that 4.45 guy coming out, very physical, and once he had that open lane, he could go the distance," Shanahan said. "At that time, he was about 205 pounds and averaged almost six yards a carry. ... I look at Helu as having that type of ability, that type of speed."
Fantasy Analysis:
That's Mike Shanahan talking, so you know the deal -- grain of salt. Helu, a fourth-round pick, was extremely productive in his final two seasons at Nebraska, and he would seem to be a good player for Shanahan's one-cut, zone-blocking scheme. It appears he'll compete with Keiland Williams
and Ryan Torain
for the starting job. I don't have very high expectations for Helu in 2011 as he still needs to learn more about running inside and using his size to his advantage. But he's someone to keep an eye on, perhaps worth a late-round flyer in deep drafts.
