Eagles place exclusive-rights franchise tag on Michael Vick

The Philadelphia Eagles would like to sign Michael Vick @MikeVick to a long-term contract. For now, they will take it a year at a time. The team confirmed Tuesday that it has placed the exclusive-rights franchise tag on Vick, the Associated Press' 2010 Comeback Player of the Year. He will be paid roughly $16 million with the franchise tag, according to NFL.com's Jason La Canfora. That number is an average of the five highest-paid NFL quarterbacks. The exclusive-rights stipulation prevents other teams from attempting to sign Vick to an offer sheet. Vick is the first player given the exclusive tag this season. In 2010, his first season as a starting quarterback in four years, Vick set career-highs with a 62.6 completion percentage and 30 total touchdowns despite playing in just 12 games.

Fantasy Analysis:

Of course, it remains to be seen if franchise tags will be a part of the league's next collective bargaining agreement. There's a chance they could be subtracted from the CBA, meaning Vick might become a free agent. Regardless, the Eagles will find a way to sign Vick to a lengthy contract at some point, either before or after next season. For fantasy purposes, you need to weigh Vick's pros and cons. He has shown to be the No. 1 fantasy QB -- and possibly the No. 1 overall player -- when healthy. But he is relatively fragile and puts himself at great risk for injury every time he scrambles out of the pocket, as he does often.
