Chargers' Vincent Jackson gets franchise tag treatment
After much speculation over the past year about when Vincent Jackson
's days as a Charger would conclude, it currently looks like he will remain in San Diego for yet another season. The Chargers tagged him with the non-exclusive franchise player designation Tuesday. That designation means he can still negotiate with other team. But if that team signs him to an offer sheet, it would have to surrender two first-round draft picks to the Chargers. If the current collective bargaining agreement expires in the last minute of March 3 without a new deal in place, free agency won't be an option and there may be no validity to these franchise tags either. But as of now, Jackson is a Charger for another year. He wants a long-term contract, but stands to take in quite a raise for 2011. He made less than $300,000 last year; he will earn more than $10 million in 2011 with the tag.
Fantasy Analysis:
I will no longer assume the fate of franchise tags and just deal with Jackson in fantasy terms. He played in only four games last season due to his dispute regarding his contract, and outside of his 112-yard, three-touchdown explosion against the 49ers in week 15, he didn't do much of anything notable. But if he actually shows up to preseason camp this year and puts in a full 16 games, he can still be a low-end No. 1 WR. Jackson is just 28, he is Philip Rivers' top wide receiver and could play with a lot of motivation has he continues to chase a big-money deal.
