Auburn's Cam Newton to enter NFL Draft

Heisman Trophy winner, national champion and the current golden child of college football, quarterback Cam Newton of Auburn is going pro. He made the announcement Thursday. "This decision was difficult for me and my family," Newton said in a statement. "After talking to [head coach Gene] Chizik and [offensive coordinator Gus] Malzahn, I think it is best that I make that next step in my career and forgo my senior season and enter the NFL Draft." Newton's 2010 season was nothing short of outstanding. He scored an FBS-leading 51 touchdowns and became the first SEC player to throw for at least 2,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards. Newton became one of only three players in NCAA history to throw and run for at least 20 touchdowns each in the same season. He threw for 30 TDs, ran for 20 more and even caught one, breaking Auburn's single-season record for rushing touchdowns and passing touchdowns.

Fantasy Analysis:

Newton's draft stock is as fluid as any first-round prospect. He dominated in 2010, but the fact that he worked in a spread (non-pro style) offense at Auburn may hurt him. Aside from being a great runner and very well built, he's got great arm strength, although he does need to refine his passing skills. All in all, he reminds me a lot of Tim Tebow. Each player came from the same offensive system with the same accolades and with similar questions to answer out of college. In the final couple of weeks of this past season, Tebow showed he has the potential to be a quality NFL QB. I believe Newton has as much potential and should be off the board by No. 20 at the very latest.
