49ers' G.M. says QB of the future isn't on current roster

It sounds like after six years, no playoff appearances, a 19-31 record as a starter, a 53:69 touchdown-to-turnover ratio and a secured legacy as a huge draft failure, the San Francisco 49ers are somehow ready to move on from quarterback Alex Smith. "Is the quarterback of the future on this roster?" Niners general manager Trent Baalke said Tuesday. "I think it's obvious that he isn't at this point." Baalke said changes will be made via the draft, trade or free agency. The flaw with that thinking is teams won't be able to trade or sign free agents until a new collective bargaining agreement is reached.

Fantasy Analysis:

I'm sure 49ers fans could tell you they knew this about Smith three years ago. He has been a gigantic bust considering San Fran took him at No. 1 in 2005. Troy Smith isn't the future. No, not David Carr @DCarr8 either. Nate Davis, a fifth-round pick from 2009 who is on the practice squad, hasn't played in a regular-season game and thus is an unknown. I think the Niners will focus on drafting whom they believe can be that quarterback of the future this April. They have the seventh pick in the draft, so the likes of Jake Locker, Ryan Mallett, Cam Newton will likely be available. I don't think Blaine Gabbert will last that long.
