Panthers hire Ron Rivera as head coach
Ron Rivera has always been a groomsman, never a groom in the NFL. But after nine career interviews to be a head coach, the Carolina Panthers hope Rivera will be their perfect match. The team hired the Chargers' defensive coordinator to be their next head coach Tuesday and signed him to a four-year deal worth about $11 million, according to ESPN. Rivera takes over a 2-14 team that ranked last in the NFL this season in total offense and scoring offense, and allowed the seventh-most points per game. Carolina has the first pick in this year's draft.
Fantasy Analysis:
As a defensive mind, it will be noteworthy when Rivera picks his offensive coordinator as that person will have more of a fantasy impact than Rivera. Rivera said during his introductory press conference that he wants his offense to be balanced.
"I'm talking about having the balance that when you have to throw it, you will throw it. when you have to run it, you run it. But you do it because you choose to."
But which team doesn't strive for balance? Of course Rivera wants balance; it'll just be difficult to perform with Jimmy Clausen
putting his team in endless third-and-long situations. If they don't trade the pick, I expect Rivera and the Panthers to go with a defensive player -- D'aQuan Bowers? -- with their No. 1 pick.
