Dolphins extend head coach Tony Sparano through 2013

Despite spending the week trying to woo a would-be replacement, the Miami Dolphins have made it clear Tony Sparano will remain their head coach a little while longer. According to a source via the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the team agreed to extend Sparano's current contract two years through the 2013 season. According to the source, Sparano's $2.8 million salary is believed to remain in the same range, and he will have an "expanded role" in player personnel decisions. The Dolphins are 25-23 in three seasons under Sparano and have missed the playoffs in the past two seasons.

Fantasy Analysis:

I can't wait for the press conference to announce this extension. Specifically, I can't wait for Dolphins owner Stephen Ross and/or general manager Jeff Ireland to say how much they like Sparano as head coach, they believe he has a solid plan for a future, they trust him entirely to lead the Dolphins, etc. Because it would be all lies. Although the extension displays trust, how can the brass honestly say it fully believes in Sparano? If that was true, they wouldn't have flew across country to convince Jim Harbaugh to fill a job that wasn't even vacant. Fantasy-wise, this news doesn't mean much; I just think this is a pathetic PR move.
