49ers win Jim Harbaugh sweepstakes

The San Francisco 49ers have hired former Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh to be their new head coach. Harbaugh had been the hot ticket coach, interviewing with San Francisco, Oakland, Miami and even possibly returning to Stanford. But ultimately, Harbaugh chose to make San Francisco his first head coaching experience. "This is the perfect competitive opportunity for me, and the rest of the San Francisco organization, to be part of a team, a team that has a chance to win for the San Francisco 49ers," Harbaugh said. The 49ers struggled to rise from mediocrity under former head coach Mike Singletary after starting the 2010 season with five straight losses. Harbaugh signed a five-year deal which averages $5 million per season.

Fantasy Analysis:

It remains to be seen whether Harbaugh is a good or bad coaching hire but for the time being, this feels like a good first step in the reconstruction of the 49ers. San Francisco hasn't made the playoffs since 2002 and for now, that is the first challenge. Harbaugh will come in and likely need to find a quarterback to lead the team, a position he is definitely very familiar with after playing the position for 15 years in the NFL. For San Francisco, this is also the big splash that owner Jed York had hoped to make. Harbaugh comes in as the highly-desired head coach in a market where a number of teams are looking for a new head coach and time will tell whether he can get the 49ers back on track.
