Jaguars' David Garrard out due to finger surgery
The Jacksonville Jaguars still have a shot at the playoffs, but they'll have to attempt it without their starting quarterback. David Garrard
will undergo finger surgery Thursday and miss the team's game this Sunday against the Texans. He injured his right middle finger when he hit it on the helmet of a Colts defensive player two weeks ago. Trent Edwards will likely get the start, but that has yet to be confirmed. Todd Bouman is also on the roster and started in place of Garrard earlier this season. The Jaguars can make the playoffs with a win against Houston and a Colts loss to the Tennessee Titans. Even if they make it, Garrard appears unlikely to be available for the first round of the playoffs.
Fantasy Analysis:
The deck is stacked against Jacksonville. Garrard, out. Maurice Jones-Drew, likely out. Mike Sims-Walker, obviously playing hurt. The Texans are a great matchup for any passing offense in fantasy, but the absence of Garrard puts a damper on the potential. Edwards has a well-deserved reputation as a check-down artist while Bouman's favorite targets during his week-seven start were MJD and Marcedes Lewis
. I think Mike Thomas
is still in the WR3 range because of the matchup, but I have concerns as to how often either backup QB will look for him. Lewis is a solid play no matter whom the quarterback is. Rashad Jennings -- if MJD is out -- is flex worthy because of his receiving ability. I know he was a disappointment last week, but in a week where some valuable running backs may see limited or no playing time (McCoy, Forte, Green-Ellis, Tomlinson), I think Jennings is a top-25 RB for week 17.
