49ers fire Mike Singletary

San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary was fired after Sunday's loss to the St. Louis Rams. The 49ers' slim chances at making the playoffs ended with the 25-17 loss. San Francisco entered the season with high hopes and expectations but will ultimately end the 2010 season on the wrong side of .500. The 49ers have not made the postseason since 2002. The 49ers have gone 5-5 since their abysmal 0-5 start but that wasn't enough in a very weak NFC West division. Singletary took over as the interim head coach in October 2008 after the firing of Mike Nolan. Defensive line coach Jim Tomsula will coach the final game of the season.

Fantasy Analysis:

This change is for the best. Nobody can question Singletary's drive or "want-to" but this a results driven business for coaches and players alike. Singletary will certainly land on his feet elsewhere but San Francisco needed a change. With a new regime, the 49ers will likely be on the market for a new quarterback in the draft. This is essentially the death knell for quarterback Alex Smith's shot at ever being a starting quarterback in the NFL. Owner Jed York has very high expectations for the team and has long-stated he expects the 49ers to compete for a Super Bowl every year. He'll have his chance at "carte blanche" with the departure of Singletary.
