Colts place Austin Collie on injured reserve

After a couple days of playing coy, the Indianapolis Colts have made a decision on wide receiver Austin Collie @AKCollie_17. It's the right decision. The team placed Collie on injured reserve Wednesday, three days after he sustained his second concussion in six weeks. This latest one came late in the first half against Jacksonville when linebacker Daryl Smith appeared to hit him in the head with his forearm as Collie went low to make a catch. It cut short Collie's first game action since Nov. 21. He left that game because of re-occurring post-concussion symptoms due to a Nov. 7 concussion. Collie ends his sophomore season with 58 receptions in nine games. He racked up 649 yards and a team-high eight touchdowns. Blair White will step back into Collie's position in the slot.

Fantasy Analysis:

This is just a sad end to what could have been an outstanding season. Collie was on his way to stardom after the first three weeks of the season during which he caught 27 passes for 359 yards and four touchdowns. At that point, he was the highest-scoring wide receiver in fantasy football. His yardage production tapered off afterward, but he was still getting into the end zone. Then came that game at Philadelphia that changed his entire season. While he may have been able to come back for the playoffs -- if the Colts make it -- I commend the organization for doing what's best for the player and not putting him at more risk after multiple bouts of head trauma. Hopefully he's able to return next season at full strength and continue his great play.
