Vikings' Brett Favre concussed, playing status unknown
"The field is as hard as concrete ... and anyone that hits their head is getting a concussion."
Turns out Chris Kluwe was right. That much-discussed tweet from the Vikings punter foretold the future, at least of Brett Favre on Monday night. Favre, who started the game after being listed as "out" on the injury report Saturday, was sacked in the second quarter by defensive lineman Corey Wootten. As Wootten spun the future Hall of Famer to the ground, his head bounced off the turf. That would be Favre's last snap of the night. Now we have to see if it's the last snap of his career. To that point, Favre wasn't saying much after the game.
"I don't know with this concussion, based on my decision-making, I probably shouldn't tell you one way or the other right now," Favre said. "I don't regret [starting]. I wish it would have turned out differently.
"It was one of the few times that I kind of went blank there for a while in my career."
Favre completed five of seven passes for 63 yards prior to the concussion. He threw one touchdown and one interception. Rookie Joe Webb
, who was expected to start up until a couple hours before kickoff, took over for Favre. He scored a rushing touchdown, but threw two picks and looked genuinely confused by the Bears' defense.
Fantasy Analysis:
I'd be very pessimistic about almost any player playing less than one week after suffering a concussion, but after Monday's surprise start, I'll reserve judgment on Favre. It's interesting to note that while Percy Harvin
turned in a pretty nice fantasy game -- five catches, 72 yards and a score -- Sidney Rice
caught just two passes for 23 yards. Webb was hardly looking for Rice. He was so panicky about the pass rush, he spent his whole night checking down. I'd expect more of the same pressure Sunday night at Philadelphia, so Rice probably should be benched in many leagues.
