UPDATE: Giants' Smith out longer than anticipated

News of New York Giants wide receiver Steve Smith @SteveSmithWR's season-ending injury came earlier in the week, but after further testing, the prognosis is worse than initially believed. Smith will undergo microfracture surgery and mosaicplasty on his injured knee. Rehabilitation could take anywhere from six to nine months. Such a long rehab time would well into minicamps, training camp and possibly the beginning of the 2011 season. Furthermore, Smith is up for free agency after this season as he is still playing under his rookie contract. It's unlikely the Giants, or any other team would be willing to give him a long-term deal considering the seriousness of his current injury status.

Fantasy Analysis:

His season-ending injury status was a blow to many fantasy owners but for anyone considering hanging onto Smith in a keeper league should consider this the final straw. Smith is a great PPR guy and has emerged as a reliable receiver in these past two seasons. But with all this new information, he's untouchable and undraftable next season until his status is cleared up considerably. Luckily the Giants have a good set of wide receivers with Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham @ManninghamNYG but they may need to consider adding some depth for the playoffs and for next season in case Smith isn't able to return to form.
