Chiefs give Charles a five-year, $32.5 million contract extension

Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles @jcharles25 signed a five-year, $32.5 million contract extension with $13 million guaranteed. Charles is currently in his final year of a three-year contract signed as rookie in 2008. Charles currently has 182 carries for 1,137 yards and three rushing touchdowns. He also has 34 receptions for 379 yards and one TD. His 6.2 yards per carry leads the NFL. He has been splitting carries with running back Thomas Jones. Jones has 187 carries, but only 765 yards. Charles was a third-round pick from the University of Texas in 2008 who had a breakout 2009 season after filling-in for former Chiefs running back Larry Johnson.

Fantasy Analysis:

This is much deserved. Charles is third in the NFL in rushing and is part of the two-headed rushing monster in Kansas City that has the Chiefs leading the league in rushing. Charles greatest asset is his speed and lateral agility. The young man is a pure rusher with good vision and is a threat to score with the ball in his hands. Kansas City is in the driver's seat in the AFC West division race. By securing Charles for an additional five years, they keep one of their brightest young stars and set themselves up to be competitive for years to come. This new deal begins in 2011 and ends in 2015.
