UPDATE: 49ers going back to QB Alex Smith
Update: On Tuesday, head coach Mike Singletary confirmed that Alex Smith will be his starting quarterback for week 14. The San Francisco 49ers are 4-8, third place in the NFC West, and six days away from a must-win home game versus the Seattle Seahawks. And when the going gets tough, you know the saying -- the tough go to Alex Smith. NFL.com's Jason La Canfora broke the news Monday with information from a source close to the situation. Smith, who hasn't played since separating his shoulder in week seven, will replace Troy Smith after his five-start stint. Troy Smith started out strong, leading the team to a couple of wins. But he has really struggled over the past three weeks. His completion percentage is less than 50 percent since week 11, and he has thrown three interceptions to go with two touchdowns. Alex Smith, who started the Niners' first seven games, was nearing his own benching before a couple of solid weeks seemed to have saved his job. Then his shoulder fell out against Carolina.
Fantasy Analysis:
Troy's limited knowledge of the offense doom him. Regardless, Alex is not a fantasy option. The biggest impact of this news concerns Michael Crabtree
and Vernon Davis
. Well, maybe just Davis, considering Crabtree has been up and down all season, no matter who's been at quarterback. Meanwhile, Davis has been much more productive with Alex Smith. Before Sunday's season-best 126-yard game, Davis had caught just eight passes for 126 yards and no scores in four games with Troy Smith starting. Davis scored in each of the four games immediately before Alex's injury. His deserves a slight upgrade and is a top-five tight end.
