Giants' claim Devin Thomas off waivers

With injuries to their two best receivers, the New York Giants have claimed former Washington Redskins wide receiver Devin Thomas off waivers. Thomas was recently cut by the Carolina Panthers who were having injury problems at the position as well. The Giants will be without Steve Smith for at least another week and Hakeem Nicks for possibly three weeks. In their absence, there is very little experience behind veteran Mario Manningham. Thomas was released by the Redskins earlier in the year. A second-round draft pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, Thomas struggled to make an impact in Washington. He showed brief flashes but supposedly lacked the consistency and work ethic to maintain his career with the Redskins.

Fantasy Analysis:

The Giants need somebody and there obviously aren't many quality guys left on waivers. Losing Nicks and Smith is huge right now as New York is attempting to secure a good spot in the playoffs and really, they still aren't a playoff lock yet. Nicks has played out of his mind this season and become a top 10 WR. Smith's numbers are down due to Nicks explosion but he's still a quality starter in most leagues. The addition of Thomas is a no-brainer. He has experience and there is still potential there if he wants it enough. New York needs depth and they need to be able to work their guys in practice. There's still the outside possibility, however remote it may be, that Thomas can turn himself around and earn a spot on the team.
