Giants' Steve Smith hurt during Thursday practice, playing status in doubt

The New York Giants may be without their second-best wideout for this Sunday's game versus the Dallas Cowboys. According to the New York Daily News, Steve Smith @SteveSmithWR strained a pectoral muscle while reaching out for a pass during Thursday's practice and was sent for tests immediately. "He had trouble driving his arms after the injury so he couldn't continue but I don't have anything else to tell you until the tests," head coach Tom Coughlin said of Smith. Offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride said the subtraction of Smith is "a huge loss, but we'll make do." Ralph Vacchiano, Giants beat writer for the Daily News, wrote that the situation is being treated with "great concern."

Fantasy Analysis:

The Giants could defeat the Cowboys easily without Smith (and probably all skill-position starters, but I digress). Given the opponent, I think if Smith experiences any pain going into Sunday afternoon, the team may play it safe and hold him back. The Giants and Cowboys kickoff at 4:15 p.m., and we probably won't know if he'll play until Sunday afternoon. If he's active, I think you have to start him since there is no matchup more attractive to NFL offenses lately than the Cowboys. If he can't go, Mario Manningham @ManninghamNYG would step into a starting role. He's a solid fantasy play as well, starter or not. He can do plenty of damage as the Giants' No. 3 wide receiver.
