Wade Phillips finally out in Dallas
For the longest time, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones resisted the urge to make a change at head coach, even as his team's fan base clambered for it. But Sunday's night most recent shame, dropping the preseason NFC favorites to 1-7, showed Jones that this circus has gone on long enough. Jones fired head coach Wade Phillips on Monday. Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett is now the interim head coach while defensive line coach Paul Pasqualoni has been promoted to defensive coordinator. "I recognized that after the game we just weren't playing winning football and our best chance was to make a change," Jones said. "We are grateful to Wade and his contribution to the Cowboys, leading us. We also clearly understand we are not where we want to be at this time, and that's an understatement. We share the responsibility -- all of us."
Fantasy Analysis:
Finally. The Cowboys have been a disaster this season and there is not one aspect of the game that they are even average at right now. But considering Phillips was the defensive coordinator as well as the head coach, he had to go. The offense has definitely struggled, but that defense is the definition of deplorable. And that's being kind to the secondary.
Garrett's not going to work miracles with that offense and his new title doesn't mean much of anything for the fantasy value of Miles Austin
or Jason Witten
, etc. But the switch can't make things any worse, right? If you are relying on Cowboys, all you can ask is for is that the team plays with more passion for Garrett than it did for Phillips. Of course, you can't play with any less passion than Dallas' current level of zero.
