Lions' Matthew Stafford re-injures throwing shoulder

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford @Staff_9 re-injured his right throwing shoulder in his team's 23-20 overtime loss against the New York Jets. While being tackled, Stafford landed on the shoulder. In the Lions' season opener, Stafford separated the same shoulder. This injury forced him to miss the next five games until his return last week against the Washington Redskins. "He's very sore," coach Jim Schwartz said. "We took enough time with it that we thought that, any re-injury would be a new injury. We'll see where he is with that." Backup Shaun Hill is still recovering from a broken arm. Third-string Drew Stanton filled in for both to close out the game.

Fantasy Analysis:

The Lions may be better off than they were last year in the wins column, but they really need Stafford back next week. It's unlikely Shaun Hill will be ready to go next week. Stafford will undergo tests and his situation is worth monitoring as Stanton has very little experience and isn't on the same level as Stafford. After jumping out to a quick lead, losing Stafford really crushed the Lions chances to win this game. He had thrown two touchdowns and ran for another before the injury as he moved the ball effectively against a difficult Jets defense. Stafford's status for Week 10 will come later in the week after observation and tests.
