Matt Hasselbeck ruled out; Charlie Whitehurst will start at QB for Seahawks
This is why "minor" concussions don't exist.
While Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck
was believed to have such a concussion coming out of Sunday's loss to Oakland, head coach Pete Carroll said Thursday that it's a little more serious than he thought. So Hasselbeck is out and Charlie Whitehurst is in. He will get his first career start at home this Sunday versus the New York Giants.
"He's ready," Carroll said of Whitehurst. "I've talked to Charlie from the first day he got here that he's coming here to play football. Nothing else. He's not coming here to be a backup or to do anything other than to make himself a spot. He has done a fantastic job up until this point. He's done everything that we've asked of him and we're real excited to see him play now."
The Seahawks were criticized when they acquired the 28-year-old Whitehurst from the San Diego Chargers in March for the price of a lower 2010 second-round pick and a 2011 third-round pick. Whitehurst has never thrown a pass in a regular-season game through five years in the NFL. He'll get his first chance to do so against the league's No. 1 team in total defense.
Fantasy Analysis:
Obviously bad news for the entire Seahawks offense. The change may mean more carries for Marshawn Lynch, but I'm not sure that will mean much against the Giants. Eight of Lynch's nine carries against the Raiders last week did not go for positive yardage. With Mike Williams
out for a second consecutive day of practice today, you should probably avoid all parts of Seattle's passing game this weekend. Hasselbeck will try to come back in time for week 10's game at Arizona.
