Redskins and McNabb disagree on his health
There's a mini-controversy brewing over why the Washington Redskins coaching staff benched starting quarterback Donovan McNabb
this past Sunday late in the game. First, head coach Mike Shanahan explained that backup Rex Grossman had a better grasp of the offense and its terminology which is key in the two-minute drill. Next, Shanahan stated that McNabb had a hamstring injury which made Shanahan doubt whether he had the endurance to run a two-minute drill with no timeouts. The latest reason given by the Redskins coaching staff is that McNabb was told in advance he'd be benched if the team felt he was struggling.
Fantasy Analysis:
Mike Shanahan is old school, as old school as they come in the NFL. And when he benches someone, it's for a reason. He's not going to come out in front of the media and say, "Oh hey, well here's exactly why he did it." He's going to play the PR game, give mixed messages and keep people confused. McNabb's benching is either a wake-up call, a sign of things to come or both. McNabb hasn't exactly had a great year, so this shouldn't be a total shock. But the handling of this issue has been misguided. For the fantasy owners who have McNabb, it's likely a good time to move on. It seems Washington is cursed with bad luck but bringing in a veteran QB was short-sighted to say the least. McNabb is a pro and there's no doubting his resume, but this may have been the wrong fit for him and his career.
