No surgery needed for Cowboys' Tony Romo; likely out 8 weeks
The news isn't as disastrous as it could be for Tony Romo and his fantasy owners. But it's still not good. Romo's season isn't officially over; it's just very close to officially over. a CT scan showed Tuesday that he will not need surgery to fix his broken collarbone but he will miss at least six games and likely eight, according to The Dallas Morning News. "If the fracture had been in the middle of the collarbone or closer to the sternum, then the break could be surgically repaired with a plate," wrote David Moore of the Morning News. "But the fracture is toward the shoulder joint, making it more difficult to use a plate. The only thing that will help heal the bone is time. The common thinking is that if the Cowboys are out of playoff contention by the time Romo is well enough to return -- something that seems to be a foregone conclusion with their current 1-5 mark -- they won't risk re-injury to to their franchise QB. But owner Jerry Jones said last night that Romo will be out there when he's healthy, no matter what the team's record is. "When he's ready to go, we want him to play," Jones said.
Fantasy Analysis:
Six weeks is extremely optimistic. Just assume that Romo will be out for eight weeks. Everyone in the Cowboys' organization is doing so. That means he wouldn't be back until a Christmas day game at Arizona. That's week 16. That's the championship week in many fantasy leagues. So if you have Romo in your re-draft league and know that you can afford to roll with his dead weight for the next two months, go ahead and stash him at your own risk. But no one would be surprised if you cut the line now. There are two games at most left in Romo's season. And, to the contrary of what Jones said, I don't think there's a good chance he plays in those games even if he is healthy. Jon Kitna will take over for the time being. He looked OK after a wretched third quarter for the entire team and should be at least picked up in all leagues of 10 teams or deeper. I wrote my opinion on how I think this major injury affects the Cowboys from a fantasy standpoint. Check out my note about Romo's injury from late last night for that.
