Report: Chargers' Antonio Gates will not play Sunday
Nothing is official, but Mike Florio from ProFootballTalk.com is a pretty trustworthy source and he said Saturday, via a team source, that San Diego Chargers tight end Antonio Gates
will not play Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs. Gates has been bothered by foot pain for the majority of the past year. He missed six games last season due to foot injuries -- plantar fasciitis, specifically. Gates didn't practice at all this week and is listed as questionable on the team's official injury report.
Fantasy Analysis:
Randy McMichael
is Gates' backup on the Chargers, but he's more of a blocking tight end than a receiver. If you need to replace Gates, you shouldn't have too much trouble finding a stopgap. Thanks to the nearly 60:40 pass-to-run ratio in the league this season, a bunch of tight ends have come out of nowhere to become decent fantasy contributors.
We'll check back on Gates next week, but this isn't going to go away. He'll be questionable for most weeks from here on out. But with the Chiefs coming up at home, the Chargers can afford to sit him. I don't expect San Diego's offense to suffer without him.
