Keiland Williams to become Lions' short-yardage RB?
Last we heard from running back Keiland Williams
, he was being released by the Washington Redskins, who had planned to use him solely as a fullback this season. However, the Detroit Lions picked him up off of waivers, and head coach Jim Schwartz really likes the addition. There is even speculation from MLive.com that the Lions may use Williams as their short-yardage runner, filling the void left after rookie Mikel Leshoure ruptured his Achilles tendon last month.
"(He's) a little bigger runner," Schwartz said of Williams, "very productive in a role last year for the Redskins. He scored some touchdowns, caught a lot of passes, played on third down -- did a lot of different things we liked when we saw him this year in preseason."
*I've been notified that I incorrectly attributed a quote in this note I thought was about Williams. I have deleted said quote. Thanks for the notification and for reading. I've got to slow down when I put these things together.
Fantasy Analysis:
Well, the Lions' backfield could certainly use some size. Jahvid Best
, Maurice Morris and Jerome Harrison aren't the most intimidating trio ever comprised. And Williams did have some nice games last season -- his three-TD effort against the Eagles stands out. But I'm not so sure he becomes the goal-line runner in Detroit. I'll believe it when I see it. Williams is a limited NFL talent, who can be used on third downs. But I don't think his presence will take much away from Best's value; I'm still fine with him as an RB2. I'm not even sure Williams can be a solid short-yardage rusher. And if Best were to get injured, I would think either Harrison or Morris would get more carries than Williams. I guess we'll find out. But Williams isn't high up on my list of the best free-agent pickups.
