Lions try to fortify ground game with RBs Jerome Harrison, Mike Bell

In the wake of Mikel Leshoure's season-ending Achilles injury, the Detroit Lions are doing anything they can to refill their stable of running backs. On Tuesday, the team announced it signed two running backs who were traded for each other last season. Mike Bell and Jerome Harrison are the two newest Lions. The pair of 28-year-old rushers were involved in a straight-up trade on Oct. 13, 2010 that sent Harrison from Cleveland to Philadelphia for Bell in return. Bell was poor last season, combining for 47 carries between his two teams and rushing for only 99 yards. He hasn't averaged four yards per carry since his rookie season of 2006 with the Broncos. Harrison ran for 239 yards on 40 carries as an Eagle. His claim to fame is his 286-yard game from week 15 of the 2009 season while with the Browns. He ran for 561 yards in the final three games of that season but hasn't come close to duplicating that success since.

Fantasy Analysis:

You never want to see anyone get hurt, but the timing of Leshoure's injury was very unfortunate for the Lions. If this had happened last week, the Lions could have had a shot at someone such as Ricky Williams, Jason Snelling or Willis McGahee. Instead, they are left to pick from some rather undesirable free agents. Harrison is the better player. But he's not the bigger player, and the Lions are really lacking size with the loss of Leshoure. Jahvid Best @J4hvidbest is still the No. 1 RB in Detroit and should get 15-20 touches per week. But someone will have to claim the goal-line and short-yardage duties. The two new guys will compete against Maurice Morris and Aaron Brown for a role on the team. If I had to choose, I'd say that Harrison will become Best's immediate backup, but I'm not willing to take a chance on any of these players other than Best right now. He's a decent RB2.
