Lions RB Mikel Leshoure tears Achilles tendon, out for season
The first devastating injury in training camp to a fantasy-relevant player occurred Monday. Detroit Lions rookie running back Mikel Leshoure
tore his Achilles tendon during an 11-on-11 scrimmage and had to be carted off the field.
"You could tell on the field, just No. 1 from the way he went down, and then on the field there's no more tests that need to be done or anything else," head coach Jim Schwartz said. "He'll have surgery very soon, probably tomorrow, and he'll be back. He won't be back this year, but he'll be back."
Fantasy Analysis:
That's tough to say since Achilles injuries can rob a running back of some physical attributes for the rest of his career. By my count, I think Leshoure is the seventh player to be lost for the entire upcoming season because of an Achilles injury. Just a coincidence? I doubt it. This is very tough news for the Lions, who were depending upon Leshoure to be their goal-line and short-yardage runner. Jahvid Best
remains the team's No. 1 back, but now Maurice Morris, 31, seems to be the immediate backup -- and he's been sidelined in training camp due to a fractured hand. Look for the Lions to add a bigger back among the few who remain free agents. With Leshoure and Nick Fairley both undergoing surgery, and rookie Titus Young having to deal with bouts of "muscle tightness" in a leg, introduction to the NFL has been simply awful for Detroit's top-three draft picks.
