Multiple Saints receivers back to working out after surgery
New Orleans Saints wide receiver Marques Colston
revealed to the New Orleans Times-Picayune on Thursday that he underwent microfracture surgery on his right knee during the offseason. However, Colston is already working out at full speed with teammates and said he has no limitations.
"I'm doing everything now," Colston said. "It's just about getting my conditioning back."
Colston told the Times-Picayune he knew he would eventually need the surgery performed on the knee, but he played through the pain in 16 of the team's 17 games last season. He missed the final game of the regular season after aggravating the knee during the prior week's game.
Colston also had wrist surgery and wasn't the only New Orleans wideout to go under the knife. Robert Meachem underwent an operation to alleviate the pain in his left ankle, which Meachem said bothered him for "pretty much" all of last season.
Fantasy Analysis:
Meachem said he's had problems with that ankle since childhood and believes he will rebound from his disappointing 2010 campaign because of the surgery. I'm skeptical, but Meachem does have high-upside value in the later rounds of a draft. Colston's medical sheet is really starting to build and it should worry his fantasy owners. He has now had microfracture surgery done on BOTH knees -- the right knee was worked on in 2009. And this was the fifth known knee operation Colston has had in his five-season career. Colston says that he's ahead of schedule and should be just fine for training camp, but all of that work on his knees is going to take a toll. Maybe one sign is that his yards-per-catch average has declined in each of the past two seasons. Colston is just 27, but with Meachem, Devery Henderson, Jimmy Graham and other around, you shouldn't expect anything more than 1,100 yards and 7-9 touchdowns out of him. He was chosen with the final pick of the third round in a 12-team experts draft I participated in last week, going before the likes of Dez Bryant, Brandon Marshall, Jeremy Maclin and Tampa Bay's Mike Williams. I think that's too high for Colston, considering he has so many medical red flags.
