Blaine Gabbert is a Jaguar
There is still three years and about $25 million left on David Garrard
's current Jacksonville Jaguars contract. But the team felt the need to get his replacement in order Thursday. The Jags selected former Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert
with the draft's No. 10 pick via a trade with Washington that moved them up from the 16th slot. Head coach Jack Del Rio said a QB competition will be a part of Jags training camp this summer.
"Our intention is to have David as our quarterback and have Blaine come in and push David," he said. "David is our quarterback." ... We have two good young men who are going to be battling. They're the right kind of guys. Very unselfish."
In his junior season at Mizzou, Gabbert threw 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He completed 63.4 percent of his passes.
Fantasy Analysis:
So it looks like that after many years of discussing David Garrard's seemingly tenuous job security, the clock is finally ticking on his time in J-Ville. I love this pick. Gabbert might claim the starting job in camp -- I think he's going to be a star in this league -- but if he's not up to the task quite yet, the Jags have a serviceable quarterback ready to assume his usual role. The Titans, Vikings and Panthers, who all drafted quarterbacks Thursday, can't say that. Gabbert will need to learn how to play under center after coming from Missouri's spread offense. But he's very smart and possesses above-average arm strength, mobility and accuracy. The Jags don't have a lot of threatening weapons on the outside, which has always limited their QBs' fantasy value. But with some coaching and an addition or two at WR, the Jaguars are going to have a scary-good offense led by their new and really good quarterback. Obviously, Gabbert's 2011 fantasy value depends on his training camp performance. Even if he wins the job, I wouldn't put a lot of stock in him at this point. He needs to sit back and learn for a bit.
