Titans surprise many by drafting Jake Locker at No. 8
The Tennessee Titans took a quarterback with the No. 8 pick in Thursday's draft. No big whoop. The fact that quarterback is Jake Locker has shocked many. With Missouri's Blaine Gabbert still on the board, the Titans chose to go with the former Washington Huskie as their QB of the future.
"I think he has something special in that he'll bring out the best in other players," head coach Mike Munchak said about Locker to The Tennessean. "I think they'll play hard for him. I think he is one of those guys who will find a way to win for us. And I think the guys in this building will believe in him.
With Vince Young
to be cut or traded when that time becomes possible, and only Kerry Collins and Rusty Smith on the Titans' QB roster, Locker might be the Titans' starter in September. That's something Munchak recognized to the media as a real possibility.
Fantasy Analysis:
The Titans were obviously won over by Locker's leadership skills, but intangibles shouldn't be the main reason why you take a player in the top-10 of a draft. Locker, who may have been the No. 1 pick in last year's draft if he had come out of college, is very athletic and exciting on the field. But his accuracy is in question. He does struggle to hit targets while inside the pocket and, frankly, he made too many stupid throws last year. Hmmm, an athletic-yet-inaccurate quarterback to start for the Titans. Tennessee is replacing Vince Young with a Vince Young-like? I hope Locker isn't the Titans' first-stringer when the season begins; it could be ugly for him, Kenny Britt
and anyone associated with this offense. Locker has the talent and certainly the desire to become a good NFL quarterback, but it's going to take some time and great coaching. Fantasy outlook for now is minimal/desperate.
