Tiki Barber, 35, coming out of retirement
Tiki Barber has been out of the NFL since 2006 and turns 36 years old next month. But he is planning one of the most improbable comebacks in league history. According to Barber's agent via his Twitter account, Barber has filed the appropriate papers to end his retirement and resume his NFL career. Barber told FOXsports.com that his twin brother, Ronde, had a big impact on his decision to return. "After seeing my brother still have fun at our age, it reignited the fire," Tiki Barber said. "I'm really looking forward to the challenge of seeing if I can get back to the level of where I was. I started working out again recently. It kind of shocked myself. I still had a lot of the strength I had before. I'm really looking forward to making a return." Barber has played 10 seasons in the leagues and recorded a strong ending to what will apparently turn out to be his first NFL stint. He racked 6,611 yards from scrimmage from 2004-06.
Fantasy Analysis:
But that was four years ago. I can't recall when a player who had been out of the NFL for so long returned at such an advanced age. Barber even admitted during a radio interview last year that he had lost the desire to play and the ability to keep his body in tip-top shape. You can assume as to why he's coming back -- money, failed second career, etc. -- but it doesn't matter; he's coming back. Barber may have relatively fresh legs, but you have to assume his skills have diminished at least somewhat. Since Barber retired with years remaining on his contract, his rights belong to his previous team, the New York Giants. Considering Barber's harsh comments on Eli Manning and feud with Tom Coughlin, you can bet the Giants will not bring him back. We'll have a better idea on his fantasy value after he signs with another team, but a role as a true third-down back is expected to be his best-case scenario.
