Jeremy Shockey latches on with Panthers
The Carolina Panthers haven't had a consistent receiving threat at the tight end position since perhaps Wesley Walls back in the late '90s and early 2000s. They will see if Jeremy Shockey
can change that trend. Shockey agreed to a one-year deal with the Panthers on Thursday, and he announced the move on his Facebook page.
"Looks like I'm signing with Carolina," Shockey wrote. "Time for the Next chapter. This is a great opportunity for me, and I am excited to play football. Lets hope we all have the chance to play this season."
Shockey, 30, spent his three previous seasons with the New Orleans Saints. During that time, he missed nine games due to various injuries and never surpassed either 600 receiving yards or three touchdowns in a season.
The Panthers' tight ends, Jeff King and Dante Rosario, combined for 51 receptions, 385 yards and two scores last season.
Fantasy Analysis:
Head coach Ron Rivera has said he wants a tight end to be a big part of his passing game. But first, the Panthers need to find a capable quarterback. Secondly, is Shockey really the tight end to do the job? He will be reunited with Rob Chudzinski, the Panthers' offensive coordinator who was Shockey's tight ends coach when he played for the University of Miami. But at his age and with his injury history, Shockey probably isn't going to register much of a impact. As it has been for most of his pro career, his name remains bigger than his on-field value.
