Saints cut Jeremy Shockey

It doesn't seem so long ago when Jeremy Shockey @JeremyShockey was the hot, new tight end on the scene. But he will turn 31 before next season is scheduled to begin, and now it's Shockey who is being moved to make room for another big, athletic youngster at his position. The New Orleans Saints cut Shockey on Tuesday. "Jeremy played an important role in helping our team bring a Super Bowl championship to New Orleans," head coach Sean Payton said in a press release. "He contributed to the success of our offense, both as a pass-catcher and run blocker, and we're appreciative of his efforts." Shockey played three seasons with the Saints after six with the New York Giants. He hasn't topped 600 receiving yards since 2007 and injuries have subtracted from his athleticism. He was due to earn a $4.2 million base salary for next season, a price too steep for the Saints, who have Jimmy Graham @TheJimmyGraham ready to take over the starting role.

Fantasy Analysis:

Shockey may be one of the most overrated tight ends ever when you consider all the hype he carried and the hype placed upon him into heading the NFL draft. He surpassed 700 yards receiving just twice in nine years. He has never been active for a full, 16-game season. Graham is the player mostly affected by this change. Graham, 24, is a converted basketball player who scored four touchdowns in the final three games of the 2010 season. He's 6-foot-6-inch, 260 pounds and has the body and skills that have many raving about him. Some have said he's the 2011 edition of Jermichael Finley. I won't go that far, but Graham will definitely be the most-discussed tight end in fantasy circles for summer drafts. I think he's an easy top-10 selection with enormous potential. At the very least, he should be an extremely dependable red-zone option.
